The expedition was under the leadership of John Stanley Plaskett (1865 - 1941) of the Dominion Observatory in Ottawa, the father of modern astronomy in Canada. Plaskett and Daniel Marsh from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada were both interested in the use of photography in astronomy. They set out by ship for Labrador and built their eclipse camp. The eclipse of the sun at Domino, Labrador, began August 30, 1905 at 6:51 a.m. reached totality at 7:54 and 10 seconds and lasted 2 minutes and 38 seconds. The eclipse ended at 9:40 a.m. Plaskett, Marsh and others photographed the entire expedition, from start to finish. This image shows a group of Montagnais Indians.
<subject><topic>Canadian Eclipse Expedition</topic></subject><subject><topic>Eclipses</topic></subject><subject><topic>Canada -- Labrador -- Scientific expeditions</topic></subject><subject><topic>Photography -- Scientific applications</topic></subject><subject><topic>Canada -- Labrador</topic></subject><subject><topic>Plaskett, John Stanley, 1865-1941</topic></subject><subject><topic>Marsh, Daniel Brand, 1858-1933</topic></subject><subject><topic>Montagnais Indians</topic></subject><typeOfResource>still image</typeOfResource><recordInfo><recordContentSource>Hamilton Public Library</recordContentSource></recordInfo><language><languageTerm>eng</languageTerm></language></mods><mods><location><url>http://www.canadiana.org/ECO/ItemRecord/49437</url></location><titleInfo><title>Petition of the Montagnais tribe of Indians, inhabiting the north shore of the St. Lawrence, or territory formerly designated by the name of the "King's Posts" </title></titleInfo>
At head of title: 3rd Session, 2nd Parliament, II Victoria, 1847."Printed by order of the Legislative Assembly.""Notes of the Reverend P.
